Student, California State University, Long Beach
In the essay portion of her application for a California Foundation for a
Parks and Recreation Scholarship, Marina Rabinovich wrote:
“’Strike three! Batter’s out, that’s three.’ As I look up from behind the
plate during my 30-second breather (she was an umpire) before the other team
takes the field, I am overwhelmed with what I see. A City of Lakewood Park
full of people: free swim in the pool, summer concert in the grass areas
where families are dancing and enjoying the nice summer day, plus two fields
with youth softball and baseball going on. I got chills from the view. I jut
know I picked the right profession. I love seeing a crowded park being
utilized by the community.”
A recreation and leisure studies major, Marina began her recreation career
in 1998 as a part-timer for the City of West Hollywood organizing diverse
programs. One these was specifically for the large, growing Russian
population. Since recreation leader Marina was a native of the Ukraine and
spoke the language fluently, many more such residents became involved and
connected with the City’s programs and events. She also served as a youth
sports official in the City of Lakewood and event staff member for Long
Beach State athletic programs.
More recently, she accepted a position as senior recreation leader for the
City of Burbank. She assists with adult softball and basketball leagues,
which attract over
12,000
participants per year. She reports:
“Creating community is the exact reason I decided to pursue recreation as
may major. I will be getting my certificate in campus recreation at
California State University of Long Beach. Creating community on campus will
give students a more meaningful value of the college experience. Whether on
campus or in the lager community, I know I would like to be someone who
makes a difference in the lives of others.” |
